Lemur thrives on diversity in both music and people.
She's in her element at costumed & themed events/activities. Think 80s workouts, retro parties, roller discos and Mardi Gras / Queer events. She loves the heartfelt whimsy of dress-ups and makes musical moods to suit.
Her sets cross multi-genres as diverse as swinging 60s, Motown, sassy disco, 80s belters plus all the classic funky house and electronic beats through the late 90s and early 2000s. Ghetto funk, trip hop, breaks, drum & bass, you'll find it all here.
"Infectious energy" is a phrase often used to describe her stage presence. She is not shy and has played to crowds of up to 5000 as a DJ and up to 30,000 as a percussionist. The truth is though, she much prefers smaller gigs where you get to make eye contact with people on the dancefloor, and they get to chat and shake the DJ's hand and have a hug at the end. You can't do that from a little DJ box suspended in the sky. Those moments of small connection is what family feels like. That is what Lemur's gigs feel like.
"I loved the little gigs so much that in 2014 I quit a thriving career in Community Development to play music full time. I found my niche specialising in private functions like art galleries, fashion shows, wineries, hotels, boutique weddings, campus parties and community fetes & markets."
And it's not just one-hour sets either. Lemur regularly provides entertainment at parties in sets of 5 to 10 hours. Playing background music is also a skill because it has to enhance the mood/atmosphere and suit the crowd and the time of day. There are only a handful of women in WA with a similarly broad skillset. Lemur's versatility means that she has been specifically head-hunted for many events which require professionalism, ability to work as a team (e.g. with stage manager, lighting, etc), technical skills plus very confident track selection.
Lemur is conscious of her visibility as a POC (person-of-colour) female in the male-dominated music industry and hopes to see more Australian-Asians represented as respected leaders in music/dance culture. Her website (Facebook page) includes blogs and articles on advancing gender equality in the music industry through topics such as Women in Music Technology.
