Mx. Matías’ music celebrates gender nonconformity, femininity, and calls upon her Latinx transcestors. Her guitar emulates chicha, the psychedelic cumbias of her mother’s native Perú, and the acoustic candombés of her father’s Uruguay. She also draws immense influence from Brazilian guitarists, Mexican & Caribbean boleros, and flamenco techniques. Combining these traditional elements with modern club music and a strong dose of queerness, Mx. Matías moves you to dance, sing, laugh and cry.
Matías is not only a guitarist, but also a masterful percussionist, bassist, keyboardist, and producer. Outside of her solo project, Matías spends her time playing in many other queer L.A. groups including San Cha, Michati, and Y.G.S.L.R.H.S.T.F.U.T. She also teaches music to youth around the Downtown L.A. area.
