The Genesys Project

Emerging from Los Angeles, California, blends jazz, experimental, and fusion into a genre-defying sound.

The Genesys Project brings a fresh perspective to modern jazz through original compositions that balance exploration and tradition. Formed by Varad Sahasrabudhe (guitar), Joseph Nguyen (keys), Adam Hernandez (bass), and Luke Davis (drums), the group draws from the rich history of jazz while blending in the unique cultural influences of its members. Their sound is shaped by the atmospheric clarity of ECM and the rhythmic intensity of fusion which is marked by spacious harmonies, dynamic grooves, and an improvisational approach that stays open and purposeful.

Bios

Varad Sahasrabudhe

Varad Sahasrabudhe is an incredible guitarist and a composer noted for his broad musical style. His compositions blend his cultural heritage, integrating ideas and sounds inspired from his Marathi roots. At the age of 18, he moved from Pune, India, to Los Angeles to pursue his musical interests. While studying in Los Angeles he has earned an Associates of Arts Degree from Santa Monica Community College and a Bachelors in Music (Jazz Performance) from California State University of Northridge. During his time in Los Angeles he has performed alongside renowned performers like John Beasley, Ralph Moore, Carl Allen, Jason Moran, Ernie Watts, Keith Fiddmont, Kim Richmond, and was invited by Stanley Clarke to open for him and N4ever band at the BroadStage. He has also been mentored by Ken Rosser, Andrew Renfroe, Eric Revis and many more. Varad’s commitment to his craft was honored with the JEXA Emerging Artist Grant 2024, Herb Albert Scholarship at CSUN 2024,2025, Musician's Institute Musicianship Scholarship in 2020 and the Takamine Acoustic Scholarship in 2021.

Joseph Nguyen

Joseph Nguyen is a Los Angeles-based jazz pianist and composer. He earned his Bachelor of Music at the University of California, Irvine, studying with Kei Akagi and Vardan Ovsepian and is currently pursuing a Master of Music, studying with John Escreet at California State University, Northridge. Joseph had opened for the Daniel Rotem Quartet and has performed with local Los Angeles musicians such as Mike Zilber, Barclay Moffit, Dean Koba, Matt Hall, and Kyle Zimmerman. His original music takes inspiration from contemporary jazz, choro, hip hop, rock, avant-garde, and classical music.

Adam Hernandez

Adam Hernandez is a Los Angeles–based jazz bass player, composer, and multidisciplinary artist. A BFA graduate of CalArts, they were honored as a recipient of the Charlie Haden Scholarship, recognizing both artistic excellence and a deep commitment to creative exploration.
Rooted in the jazz tradition yet driven by curiosity and experimentation, his musical voice draws inspiration from the lyrical harmony of Bill Evans, the fearless innovation of Ornette Coleman, and the contemporary sound world of James Francies. Through performance and composition, Adam seeks to create music that is expressive, open, and deeply connected to the moment. 

Luke Davis

Luke Henry Davis is a jazz drummer, composer, and arranger. Luke began studying jazz drumming at age six with Tim Metz and continued as a teenager with Rick Lotter, then in college with Tina Raymond and Jason Harnell. He has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall and the Golden 1 Center, as well as the California Jazz Championships, with international performances in Stockholm, Sweden; San Sebastián, Spain; and on the BBC Global News Podcast. Luke was awarded the Ron Jones Drum Scholarship for Outstanding Musician at the Teagarden Jazz Festival and earned CSUN's Outstanding Student in the Jazz Program Award as a freshman. He is currently at California State University Northridge pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies.
