EP Release show, November 2025

Origin Story

Emerging in 2024 from New York City, O'Laochra blends punk and alternative folk into a genre-defying sound. O'Laochra was born out of a frustration with modern rock music. They are a melodic punk band based in NYC, founded by Irish songwriter Michael Leahy. Taking influences from old school punk (the Clash), 90's alt rock (Nirvana, Sinéad O' Connor) and Irish traditional music (Luke Kelly), the band was established in 2024. Having grown up in Ireland, Leahy was raised around Irish folk and trad music & discovered punk as a teenager. Initially influenced by 90's skate punk with bands, punk grew into prog then metal then back to folk for Leahy when he moved to NYC in 2019 Spending most of 2024 writing material and rehearsing, O'Laochra had their live debut in Arlene's Grocery, LES in early 2025. Playing other venues around NYC (Cobra Club, Berlin under A, Bridge & Tunnel Brewery, Connolly's Midtown) they released their first EP, Foclóir in November 2025. The Irish word for 'dictionary', Foclóir is a collection of songs covering themes of rage, love, compassion, mythological goddesses and impulsivity. Kicking off 2026 with more local shows & a cover release of the folk song 'Dirty Old Town', the band is hitting the road for some out of state gigs this summer and then back to the studio for the fall and new material. The name O'Laochra is 'Leahy' in Gaeilge, a small nod to the native language of Ireland, and emphasizing the need to be unapologetically yourself.
