About Phil Gates

Chicago Born Recording Artist Phil Gates blends Blues, Soul and Funk into a genre-defying sound. Born in the heart of Chicago and seasoned by the eclectic rhythms of the world, Phil Gates is more than a bluesman—he is a sonic storyteller. As a descendant of a rich musical lineage and a veteran of the prestigious U.S. Air Force "Tops in Blue," Phil’s precision is matched only by his passion. His signature sound is a masterclass in fusion: the grit of Chicago Blues meets an uptempo Contemporary Blues groove, layered with sophisticated Funk and Soul and a touch of New Orleans. A winner of the "Beale Street Blues Kings" competition and a mainstay at legendary global festivals from Monterey to Athens, Phil has shared the stage and studio and worked with icons ranging from Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan to Tommy Castro and Eric Gales and to Philip Bailey and Maurice White. Whether leading his powerhouse band or crafting Grammy-balloted productions, Phil Gates delivers a high-energy performance that honors the roots while driving the genre firmly into the future. Phil’s performance history spans over 20 countries globally with his band from intimate clubs and premier festivals to the grand stage of the NFL Super Bowl Halftime Show with the U.S. Air Force’s “Tops in Blue”. Phil continues to be a prolific writer in the studio and a captivating presence on the world's most prestigious stages.
