Sevdalides

About

Sevdalides are a London-based ensemble dedicated to the rich tradition of Greek music, from Rebetiko and Smyrneiko to Laiko and the works of some of Greece’s greatest composers.

Formed by musicians from Greece and Cyprus living abroad, the group was born out of a shared love for the music, poetry and emotional depth of the Greek urban folk tradition. Their name derives from the word sevdas, a feeling of deep longing, passion and emotional devotion, a spirit that runs through both their repertoire and performances.

Drawing from the works of legendary figures such as Mikis Theodorakis, George Zambetas, Vassilis Tsitsanis, Markos Vamvakaris and many others, Sevdalides present concerts that move between intimate Rebetiko songs, classic Laiko and music rooted in the cultural memory of Greece.

Their performances combine musicianship, storytelling and improvisation with the atmosphere of a traditional parea - where audience and musicians become part of the same shared experience.

Based in London, the ensemble has performed in venues and cultural events across the UK and Europe, presenting themed tributes, concerts and collaborations that celebrate the enduring voice of Greek music beyond its borders.

“Sevdalides don’t just perform songs - they create an experience. For two hours it felt like we had been transported from London to an old Athenian taverna.”
— Alex, concert attendee

“I’ve seen Sevdalides many times over the years and no two nights are ever the same. There’s always soul, humour, spontaneity and a real connection between the musicians and the audience. It feels less like a concert and more like being part of the group.”
— Chris, regular attendee

“Sevdalides bring a rare authenticity and warmth to the stage. Their performances create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and powerful, drawing audiences into the rich emotional world of Greek music regardless of background or language.”
